The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued an important reminder to drivers aged 70 and over regarding driving licence renewal. In a recent message posted on the social media platform X, the DVLA stated: “Know someone who has just turned 70? Let them know they can renew their driving licence online: https://gov.uk/renewat70. It’s easy, quick and secure on https://GOV.UK.”
According to the government’s official website, the online services offered by the DVLA are the fastest, simplest, and often most cost-effective method for managing driving licence matters. They advise that applications made online generally result in receiving a new driving licence within five working days, or a vehicle registration certificate (V5C) within five to seven working days.
The DVLA highlights the convenience of its online system, which operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and is designed to guide customers seamlessly through the application process in just minutes. Submitting an application online eliminates the need for paper forms, as users can utilise their photo and signature directly from a valid UK passport, further reducing administrative steps.

Drivers who reach the age of 70 are required to renew their driving licences every three years by confirming their medical fitness to drive. This self-declaration process obliges individuals to inform the DVLA of any health conditions that might affect their ability to drive safely. In some cases, the DVLA may take additional steps such as contacting a driver’s GP, organising medical examinations, or arranging driving or eyesight assessments to ensure continued road safety.
Sarah Ouko, Associate and Serious Injury Solicitor, commented on the renewal system: “While the self-declaration system promotes personal responsibility, in our view it can leave room for uncertainty. Many drivers may not recognise gradual health changes, and without structured medical input, risks can go unnoticed until an incident occurs.”
