Birmingham’s iconic band Duran Duran has received a distinguished recognition with their appearance on a new Royal Mail stamp collection. This tribute charts the group’s evolution from their early days performing at the Rum Runner and other venues across the city’s vibrant club scene to achieving international acclaim.
Frontman Simon Le Bon described the honour as “a massive visual validation of the band and its history,” expressing his gratitude to be part of such a lasting legacy. Since their formation in 1978, Duran Duran have produced numerous hits including “Rio,” “Hungry Like The Wolf,” and “Ordinary World,” securing two UK number one singles and a chart-topping album.
The stamp collection features a miniature sheet showcasing their tour posters spanning from the 1980s through to the 2020s, offering a visual timeline of their live performance history. Reflecting on the achievement, Le Bon called it a “pinch yourself” moment, recalling the struggles against early scepticism and how this recognition affirms the band’s enduring presence.

“When you see those album covers all lined up, all eight of them, you look at it and say, ‘we’ve done a lot of work,'” Le Bon added. “We’ve done it together – we’ve stayed together – and it reminds us of that. I feel so happy and fortunate to be part of all that.”
Le Bon joined the band in 1980 and remains a core member alongside keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor. Rhodes expressed pride in both the band’s longevity and the unexpected nature of honours like the Royal Mail stamps. “It’s a real honour to be represented on British stamps,” he said.
Co-founder John Taylor referred to the project as “a Duran Duran legacy project,” while Roger Taylor remarked that inclusion on the stamps cements their role as “part of the cultural furniture” in the UK. “The band is almost set in stone now. Once you start getting things like this, there’s an immortality,” he reflected.
The collection highlights album covers from significant records such as ‘Duran Duran,’ ‘Rio,’ ‘Seven and the Ragged Tiger,’ ‘Notorious,’ ‘Duran Duran (The Wedding Album),’ ‘Astronaut,’ ‘Paper Gods,’ and ‘Future Past.’ Le Bon appreciated that the stamps focus on their music’s legacy rather than promotional images. “I think the fans will be really proud,” he noted.
Rhodes described the stamps as “mini masterpieces” and shared a personal reflection: “From the moment I was born I was looking at Royal Mail stamps. I was excited when letters arrived at home through the letterbox. I still am – so to be a little part of that is magical, and just the greatest honour.”
Duran Duran join an esteemed list of bands featured on Royal Mail stamps, including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Spice Girls, The Who, and AC/DC.
The release of these stamps coincides with the 45th anniversary of Duran Duran’s debut album and breakthrough single “Planet Earth,” which reached number 12 on the UK singles chart.
The stamps and a variety of collectible products are available to pre-order from 10 September, with general sale beginning on 17 September.
