Dudley MP Sonia Kumar is calling for the establishment of a Health on the High Street centre in Dudley’s town centre, believing it could be a catalyst for regeneration and community revitalization.
Drawing on her experience as a former NHS physiotherapist, Ms Kumar emphasizes that such a hub would bring vital health, wellbeing, and community support services directly to residents, making them easier to access. She argues that integrating healthcare into the heart of the town centre can generate unexpected benefits, including increased footfall, especially with the upcoming Midland Metro tram link and new bus interchange set to improve transport links.
“When considering Dudley’s future, the focus often falls on shops, businesses, and traditional regeneration efforts,” Ms Kumar explains. “These are important, but we should aim higher. What if our town centre could both support the local economy and enhance people’s health and wellbeing?”

She highlights the current challenges residents face with healthcare services being scattered and difficult to navigate. “If we’re serious about reducing health inequalities, we must rethink healthcare delivery. Bringing services into the community makes prevention easier and more effective, encouraging people to seek help earlier.”
Ms Kumar raised this proposal in the House of Commons, requesting a meeting with Health Secretary James Murray to discuss accelerating healthcare delivery in Dudley. Mr Murray responded positively, affirming the importance of accessible healthcare on high streets and revealing plans for 250 new neighbourhood health centres nationwide, with 120 targeted for delivery by 2030.
“This is part of our vision to embed healthcare into every local community,” Mr Murray stated.
Encouraged by the government’s commitment, Ms Kumar is determined to ensure Dudley becomes a key candidate for a neighbourhood health centre, aiming to place the town at the forefront of accessible healthcare innovation.
