Dudley Lib Dems Pledge Zero-Interest Loans to Boost Home Sustainability

The Liberal Democrats in Dudley have launched their local election campaign with an ambitious manifesto focused on climate action and improving daily life for residents. Central to their pledges is offering zero-interest loans to homeowners for installing heat pumps and insulation, aiming to make older homes greener and more energy-efficient.

This initiative is part of a broader set of commitments unveiled at a Stourbridge event on March 14, as Dudley prepares for council elections on May 7 where at least 25 of the 72 seats will be contested. Party leader Cllr Ryan Priest declared that the Lib Dems seek to “beat Labour, stop Reform, and start a new chapter for Dudley.”

Currently, Dudley Council is governed by a minority Conservative administration, which relies on support from the five Liberal Democrat councillors to pass key measures like the budget. While some criticize the Lib Dems for allegedly channeling spending into their own wards, the party emphasizes a borough-wide approach. Their manifesto highlights a capital programme dedicated to noticeable improvements, including additional litter bins, flagpoles in every ward, and increased community grants.

Beyond environmental initiatives, the Lib Dems promise to develop neighbourhood plans for all communities, introduce a rapid pothole repair guarantee, and make Dudley a child-first borough by assessing the impact of all decisions on young people. They also plan to establish rapid response teams to tackle antisocial behaviour.

In tackling the climate crisis, besides zero-interest loans for home upgrades, the party commits to installing solar panels on public buildings, opposing development on green belt land, and expanding safe walking and cycling routes.
