Drunk Driver Kills Student After Drinking Eight Pints and Fleeing Scene

A tragic hit-and-run incident has left a young student dead after a driver who had consumed around eight pints behind the wheel struck her and fled the scene. Abigail Eggleston, 22, was crossing the A167 at Neville’s Cross, County Durham, when Liam Bowes, 37, ran a red light and hit her with a Volkswagen Golf.

Bowes, who was driving a vehicle belonging to a friend, had been drinking at a 50th birthday party just hours before the fatal collision in the early hours of Sunday, October 26 last year. Instead of stopping to help Abigail, Bowes fled the scene, leaving her fatally injured.

Following the crash, Bowes attempted to destroy evidence by setting the vehicle on fire in a layby, resulting in significant smoke damage. He initially lied to police, claiming the car had been stolen while he was at the party, but extensive CCTV footage disproved his story. He later admitted to being the driver.

At Teesside Crown Court on March 2, Bowes pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after a collision. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, banned from driving for 18 years, and will have to pass an extended driving test to regain his license.

During the hearing, emotional victim impact statements from Abigail’s family revealed the profound pain caused by the loss. Her mother, Mandy, spoke movingly about the trauma of losing her daughter, describing Abigail as a kind, loving person with an infectious laugh and a sunny disposition.

Detective Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland praised the bravery of passers-by who intervened to prevent further harm and condemned Bowes’ cowardice in fleeing the scene. She emphasized the importance of respecting road laws and warned that driving under the influence carries severe consequences.

Additionally, three individuals – two men aged 38 and a 59-year-old woman – were arrested on suspicion of assisting Bowes but were later released on bail pending further investigation.

This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and the lasting impact on victims and their families.
