Drivers Warned of Rising ‘Frost-Jacking’ Thefts as Windshield Frost Epidemic Sweeps UK

As freezing temperatures grip much of the UK, frosty mornings are becoming a familiar challenge for drivers. However, the car insurance experts at Go.Compare are sounding the alarm about a growing threat linked to how drivers clear frost from their windscreens. Leaving cars unattended while the engine is running to defrost, a practice commonly known as ‘frost-jacking’ or ‘warm-up theft’, is putting vehicles at high risk of theft — and can also land drivers in legal trouble.

‘Frost-jacking’ happens when thieves seize the opportunity to steal vehicles left idling and unattended during the defrosting process. Although it can be tempting to simply start the engine and turn on the fans before attending to other tasks, this short convenience can result in costly consequences. Not only can a car be stolen in mere moments, but leaving an unattended running vehicle is illegal and may lead to hefty fines.

Tom Banks, a car insurance expert at Go.Compare, highlights the importance of safety and security during winter: “De-icing your car is essential for clear visibility and can take some time, but leaving your car idling and unattended is a serious risk. Thieves are on the lookout for precisely these moments to drive away with your vehicle. Plus, the law prohibits leaving an unattended vehicle running.”

Go.Compare stresses the value of a hands-on approach to winter car care. Using a quality ice scraper and applying de-icer can reduce defrosting time without compromising car security. Yet, surprisingly, only about 26% of motorists carry an ice scraper in preparation for cold weather, and just 20% use windscreen washer fluid designed to resist freezing.

With frost and snow now settling across the UK, Go.Compare urges all drivers to prioritize winter maintenance and keep essential tools within easy reach to ensure both road safety and vehicle security throughout the colder months.
