The RAC has identified Tesco as the cheapest supermarket to buy petrol in the UK amid record-high fuel prices, urging drivers at other leading retailers to shop around and avoid overpaying. Contrary to popular belief, Asda and Sainsbury’s are not the best options for filling up your tank right now.
According to recent data from the RAC, the average price of petrol at Tesco is currently 154.4p per litre, making it the most affordable choice for drivers. In contrast, Morrisons has the highest average petrol price at 155.8p per litre. Asda comes in as the second cheapest option with prices averaging 154.9p per litre, followed closely by Sainsbury’s at 155.1p per litre.
Diesel prices also vary between supermarkets, with Tesco averaging 185.6p per litre and Morrisons slightly lower at 182.4p per litre. The RAC highlights that fuel prices can fluctuate significantly even within short distances, emphasizing the importance of comparing prices.

Simon Williams, RAC’s head of policy, advises drivers: “We strongly recommend shopping around for fuel and using free tools like the myRAC app to avoid paying more than necessary."
These rising fuel prices coincide with ongoing geopolitical tensions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route. US President Donald Trump recently threatened further military action against Iran unless Tehran agrees to major concessions related to the Middle East conflict and its nuclear program, worsening uncertainty in global oil markets.
Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant, shop around for the best fuel deals, and stay informed about the factors influencing petrol and diesel prices as they navigate one of the most expensive fuel periods in recent history.
