Drivers Urged to Pack Nine Essential Items as Storm Claudia Approaches

Drivers across the UK have been urged to equip their vehicles with nine crucial items ahead of Storm Claudia’s arrival, with an amber weather warning set to take effect from midday on Friday. Birmingham is among the areas anticipated to experience significant impact.

The Met Office has emphasized the importance of preparedness and released a checklist to help motorists stay safe during the storm. The recommended essentials include an in-car phone charger, warm clothing, blankets, high-visibility clothing, jump leads, an empty fuel can, food and water, a shovel, and warning triangles.

Warning triangles play a vital role in alerting other road users to a broken-down vehicle. Ideally, drivers should carry two triangles—one to position at least 45 metres in front of the vehicle and another behind it.

Chris Wood, AA Patrol of the Year, advises motorists to reconsider the necessity of their journeys until after the storm has passed. If travel is essential, he recommends sticking to main roads, which are less prone to debris such as fallen branches.

When driving in strong winds, keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel and reduce speed. Key precautions include being alert to areas exposed to side winds, such as gaps between trees, buildings, or bridges, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, particularly motorcycles and bicycles.

Wood also advises allowing extra travel time due to likely delays and ensuring vehicles have sufficient fuel or electric charge. Drivers are encouraged to keep their mobile phones fully charged and to download helpful apps like the AA and what3words to enable quicker assistance if needed.

By following these guidelines and carrying the recommended items, drivers can better navigate the challenges posed by Storm Claudia and stay safe on the roads.
