On Wednesday, UK drivers are facing the risk of £100 parking fines amid the country’s rare solar eclipse, which will be the fullest seen here in 54 years. Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing, has warned motorists to be cautious, as more than 90% of the Sun will be obscured by the Moon between 6.17pm and 8.06pm on 12 August. This marks the greatest coverage above UK skies since the total eclipse in 1999.
The event is expected to draw large crowds to rural viewpoints, beaches, and open spaces, leading to increased traffic and parking pressures. Conway highlighted that the surge in visitors during the 1999 eclipse prompted local authorities, particularly in Devon and Cornwall, to implement measures akin to those used for major festivals. Similar crowd-control strategies may be necessary this year to manage the influx.
With 6 million parking Penalty Charge Notices issued by English local authorities outside London between 2024 and 2025-a 12% increase from the previous year-drivers are urged to familiarise themselves with local parking restrictions before setting out. Notably, parking bans may be enforced on high-speed roads and rural areas to prevent congestion and ensure safety for all road users. Illegally parked vehicles not only risk fines but can also endanger others by obstructing the roadway.

In addition to the traffic considerations, the Royal Greenwich Observatory has issued a stern warning regarding safe eclipse viewing. Sunglasses are not suitable for looking directly at the Sun during the eclipse. Imo Bell, planetarium astronomer at the observatory, explained that although this is not a total eclipse, with over 90% coverage, it remains a rare and exciting event not to be missed.
Bell emphasised the importance of using proper solar eclipse glasses, which differ significantly from ordinary sunglasses by blocking out harmful solar rays, allowing safe direct observation. For those without specialised glasses, attending local astronomy society events or using projection methods are recommended. For example, projecting the eclipse image through a household item like a colander casts the Sun’s shape onto a surface, providing a safe and fascinating viewing experience.
