Drivers Risk Licence Suspension as 1.2 Million Hold Active Speeding Penalty Points, DVLA Reveals

New data from the DVLA exposes a rising trend in speeding offences across the UK, with over 1.2 million drivers currently holding active penalty points related to speeding. This marks the third consecutive year of increase and a significant 20% rise since 2023.

According to the DVLA, 1,231,744 motorists had speeding endorsements on their licences in 2025, up from 1,023,528 in 2023 and 1,129,830 last year. This surge highlights the growing challenge of managing speed-related offences on UK roads.

More alarmingly, over 146,000 drivers now carry nine or more penalty points, placing them dangerously close to licence disqualification with any further infractions. Specifically, 132,126 drivers hold nine points, 9,682 have ten points, and 4,810 carry eleven points.

Motoring expert Ben Welham from Marshall Motor Group commented, “Speeding remains one of the most common driving offences in the UK. These figures underline how quickly penalty points can accumulate, turning what may seem like minor offences into serious risks of losing one’s licence.”

The data also reveals that motorists aged 45 to 54 are the most frequently penalised for speeding, with 270,962 penalty points recorded in this age group. Closely following are drivers aged 35 to 44 with 256,985 points, and those aged 55 to 64 with 251,086.

Younger drivers are not exempt; 68,925 speeding points were assigned to those aged 17 to 24, while cases involving drivers under 17 remain rare at just 40.

A stark gender disparity appears in the data: 856,511 male motorists received speeding-related penalty points compared to 369,233 female motorists in 2025. Within the 45 to 54 age bracket, 185,300 men were penalised versus 85,662 women.

This growth in speeding offences and accumulated penalty points serves as a warning to all drivers about the risk of licence disqualification and the importance of adhering to speed limits on UK roads.
