As petrol prices continue to climb due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the RAC has stepped up with essential advice to help drivers save fuel and money. Their Fuel Watch, which tracks petrol and diesel prices daily, has compiled a comprehensive guide featuring 10 effective tips to improve fuel economy.
While fuel costs are largely out of our hands, the RAC emphasizes that small changes in driving habits and vehicle maintenance can make a significant difference. Although purchasing a new, fuel-efficient car is an option, not everyone can afford it. To assist all drivers, the RAC’s guide focuses on optimizing the fuel efficiency of existing vehicles.
Key recommendations include regular vehicle maintenance, smooth acceleration, driving in the highest possible gear, anticipating traffic to avoid unnecessary braking, and using cruise control where appropriate. Additional tips cover removing roof racks when not in use, limiting air conditioning usage, reducing excess weight by clearing out unnecessary items from your car, leveraging fuel-saving technologies, and planning journeys to combine errands.

Regarding speed, the RAC highlights that while ideal driving speeds depend on road and traffic conditions, studies suggest the optimal speed for fuel efficiency typically falls between 45 and 50 mph. This insight aligns with earlier findings where 56 mph was often cited as efficient based on standardized fuel tests. Drivers are encouraged to practice “hypermiling”—adjusting speed and driving style according to the road ahead—to maximize efficiency.
The RAC also advises against idling for prolonged periods. If stopped for more than 10 seconds, turning off the engine is more fuel-efficient than letting it idle, which can consume up to half a gallon of fuel per hour in an average family car—enough to drive about 25 miles.
By adopting these straightforward tips, drivers can help reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, and ease the burden of high petrol prices.
