As millions of drivers prepare for journeys this Bank Holiday Monday, experts are urging motorists to take simple steps to reduce fuel and parking costs. Emma Cochrane, a consumer expert at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has outlined key strategies for road users to save money during the busy travel period.
Emma highlighted that hundreds of thousands of drivers will be on the roads this week, whether returning from festivals, ending holidays, or enjoying final day trips as summer draws to a close. She emphasised that while driving expenses such as fuel and parking can quickly accumulate, careful planning can help keep costs down and avoid unexpected fees.
One of her main recommendations is to avoid refuelling at motorway service stations and forecourts, where fuel prices tend to be higher. She explained, “Fuel prices are generally lower in areas with multiple petrol stations competing for customers. Try not to wait until you’re on the motorway to fill up, as prices there are often more expensive than nearby alternatives.”
Emma also advised motorists to document any issues encountered during their journeys, especially if payment machines malfunction or if their vehicles break down. “Taking photos and keeping receipts could be invaluable should you need to dispute a parking charge later,” she said.
Furthermore, Ms Cochrane encouraged drivers to act promptly if they receive parking tickets, reminding them of their right to appeal. “Drivers must provide evidence to successfully cancel or reduce a charge,” she stated.
Supporting these tips, RAC breakdown spokesperson Harriet Hernando commented on the anticipated increase in travel over the Bank Holiday. She noted, “With warm and dry weather encouraging many to make getaways, drivers should prepare for what is often a busy ‘frantic Friday’. Setting off before 10am can help avoid the heaviest traffic.”
Harriet also advised motorists to be prepared for potential delays by carrying plenty of water. “To reduce the risk of breakdowns, simple checks such as inspecting oil and coolant levels when the engine is cold, and ensuring tyres have sufficient grip and proper inflation, can make a significant difference,” she added.
