In a tragic case that highlights the dangers of reckless driving, Rhemeese Lawrence-Hayden, 27, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for causing the death of his best friend, David Brennan, 26. The fatal crash occurred in October 2022 in Bournville when Lawrence-Hayden sped at 102mph down a residential street in a stolen Ford Focus before colliding with a tree.
David Brennan was a front-seat passenger and was ejected from the vehicle during the violent impact. He suffered multiple fatal injuries and died in hospital, leaving behind a pregnant partner who never had the chance to introduce their daughter to her father.
Following the crash, Lawrence-Hayden initially fled the scene but returned the next day with flowers and confessed to driving the stolen car. He also handed over Brennan’s phone, carefully avoiding leaving his fingerprints on it. Court evidence revealed that Lawrence-Hayden had multiple previous convictions related to driving offenses, despite never having held a license.

Months later, he was found driving another stolen vehicle and fled police before crashing again. Diagnosed with epilepsy and advised by his doctor not to drive, Lawrence-Hayden’s disregard for the law was evident. His current 14-year sentence will begin after he completes an existing eight-year sentence related to vehicle theft and handling stolen goods.
At Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Roderick Henderson condemned Lawrence-Hayden’s actions as “deliberate contempt” for road safety and warned of the lifelong consequences of his reckless behavior. Emotional statements from David Brennan’s family painted a heart-wrenching picture of the loss they continue to endure. Brennan’s girlfriend spoke of their daughter carrying her father’s spirit despite never meeting him, while his mother described the void left by her only son’s untimely death.
