Donald Trump’s Team Defends Argentina’s Falklands Banner Celebration After England Match

Donald Trump’s World Cup chief, Andrew Giuliani, has publicly supported Argentina’s right to celebrate their victory with a banner referencing the Falklands Islands during their recent 2-1 triumph over England. The Argentine players displayed a banner in Spanish declaring, “The Falkland Islands are Argentinian,” which stirred controversy given the sensitive geopolitical history surrounding the islands.

When asked by Sky Sports correspondent Rob Harris whether Argentina’s actions were inappropriate, Giuliani defended the display citing First Amendment rights in the United States. “We believe in our First Amendment rights,” he stated. “This is going to be an incredible final, and they have the freedom to express those views.” Notably, the U.S. maintains a neutral stance regarding sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

In the aftermath of England’s narrow loss, manager Thomas Tuchel faced criticism for his late-game substitutions that saw England relinquish a 1-0 lead. Despite this, Tuchel affirmed his commitment to remain head coach through to Euro 2028.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney weighed in on the managerial debate, suggesting that if available, Pep Guardiola should be considered as Tuchel’s potential successor. “I don’t see many options right now unless Pep Guardiola is available,” Rooney told the BBC. “He is a top-class manager who learns from mistakes and improves. Tuchel has experience now, but the World Cup is a unique environment that tests you differently.”

Rooney also questioned the timing of Tuchel’s two-year contract ahead of the World Cup, noting it seemed premature given the expectation that his tenure was tied to World Cup success. “The FA said Tuchel was coming in to win the World Cup and elevate the team. It’s unusual to receive a two-year deal before the tournament starts,” he remarked.
