‘Doctors repeatedly told me I was fine - the truth was very different’

Kelly Underwood, 25, from Sutton Coldfield, faced a harrowing journey after being diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma—despite repeatedly being told by doctors that nothing was wrong. Over four months and six doctor visits, Kelly’s symptoms, including a growing lump in her neck, swollen eyes, fatigue, and itchy skin, were initially dismissed as infections.

After finally receiving a proper diagnosis, Kelly underwent six intense cycles of chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the treatment didn’t fully succeed, and she now faces the next phase of her fight: specialist radiation therapy at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. This requires her to relocate over 100 miles away, adding financial and emotional strain just as she battles her illness.

Throughout this ordeal, Kelly’s unwavering partner, Olivia Read, 28, has been by her side. Shortly after Kelly’s diagnosis, the couple got engaged, choosing love and hope in the face of uncertainty. Their wedding plans, originally set for Kenilworth Castle, were brought forward and adapted due to her health, with both exchanging proposals in intimate, heartfelt moments.

Despite cancer’s heavy toll—on her health, independence, hair, fertility, and the ability to live a “normal” young life—Kelly remains determined. She and Olivia dream of a small wedding surrounded by family and close friends, in a historic venue or peaceful forest, as a symbol of resilience and love amid the chaos.

To support their journey, Olivia launched a fundraising appeal for the costs of Kelly’s treatment and their wedding. The response was swift and generous, raising over £1,000 within the first day. Kelly also shares her story on TikTok to raise awareness and offer hope to others in similar battles.

Kelly’s journey underscores the devastating consequences of misdiagnosis and the importance of perseverance. While the road ahead is uncertain, this courageous couple remains hopeful, determined to find joy and strength in their love as they face the challenges together.
