Doctors Mistook My Cancer for Pneumonia: A Journey from Diagnosis to Recovery

At just 25 years old, ASDA manager Sheldon Donovan faced a life-altering diagnosis: Hodgkin Lymphoma, a blood cancer that initially masqueraded as pneumonia. Weighing 31 stone, Sheldon’s relentless cough led to a three-month hospital stay before a lung biopsy revealed the truth. Despite the shock, he welcomed the diagnosis as it finally brought clarity and a treatment plan.

Sheldon’s cancer had spread to his lungs, spleen, and spine, requiring six months of chemotherapy. Remarkably, he returned to his role as store manager in Worcester, determined to keep fighting. But his journey was far from over. On Christmas Eve 2019, his cancer relapsed. He underwent a stem cell transplant using his own cells, only to face another relapse in March 2020.

With his only hope resting on a donated stem cell transplant, Sheldon endured further chemotherapy and radiotherapy before a German donor matched him in October 2020. “The first question I asked was if I was going to lose my hair,” Sheldon recalls. “That was tough, but I knew recovery was ahead.”

Then, in June 2021, a new challenge emerged—Sheldon suffered a cardiac arrest caused by an infection, plunging him into a coma for seven weeks in intensive care amid the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. When he awoke, he was frail and had to relearn how to walk after being bedridden for so long. His weight had plummeted to 25 stone.

Through intensive physiotherapy and sheer determination, Sheldon not only walked again but started running and embraced a new lifestyle focused on fitness and health. He has since lost over 13 stone, transforming from a yo-yo dieter weighing 32.5 stone into an inspiring symbol of resilience.

Doctors are amazed by his recovery, and Sheldon proudly supports Cancer Research UK, attributing his survival to ongoing medical advances. He is now set to open Cancer Research UK’s newest superstore at Malvern Shopping Park, a massive 8,000 sq ft facility selling a wide range of donated items to fund life-saving research.

“I’m honoured to cut the ribbon and help others get a future like mine,” Sheldon says. The store is open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm, and Sundays, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. Donations and volunteers are warmly welcomed to support their mission.

Sheldon Donovan’s story is a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by cancer patients and the hope that research brings to countless lives.
