‘Disgusting’ £150,000 Dudley town centre revamp dominated by pigeons and antisocial behaviour

Dudley Council’s £150,000 makeover of the town centre market, launched in April 2025, aimed to create a vibrant hub for visitors and boost local businesses. The transformation replaced traditional stalls with new seating and glass screens, intending to foster a welcoming space for dining and community events, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and managed by the West Midlands Combined Authority.

However, instead of revitalizing the area, the revamped space has become plagued by large flocks of pigeons and gatherings of individuals engaging in antisocial behaviour. Many tables sit unused by people and are instead frequented by birds, while residents report issues like closed toilets, litter, and disruptive groups.

Local councillor Shaukat Ali expressed deep concerns: “The market is in a shocking state. Traders are unhappy, the hygiene is poor with pigeon droppings everywhere, and antisocial behaviour is rampant. People are fed up.” Constituents like Jayne Beard have called the area “disgusting” and a “waste of council spending.”

Critics say the project damages Dudley’s reputation and offers little support to the hardworking traders who depend on a thriving market. Aldridge Ali added, “This revamp is just the latest example of failure. The council must act swiftly to clean the area, curb antisocial behaviour, and collaborate with the community to restore the market’s appeal.”

Voices on social media concurred with the criticism. Dudley residents lament the state of the facilities and the ineffective use of public funds. One user stated, “Only the pigeons use these tables now. Who wants to eat amid pigeon droppings?” Another shared nostalgic feelings for when the space was more inviting and expressed skepticism about future improvements.

Dudley Council has been contacted for comment regarding these concerns.
