A West Midlands Police officer with over 20 years of service has been dismissed without notice after being convicted of assaulting a woman off duty in Bromsgrove. PC McTernan, once regarded as a respected member of the force, was found guilty of assault by beating by Kidderminster Magistrates' Court in February 2026.
The attack occurred on May 25 of the previous year, and McTernan was fined £1,000 with a further £600 ordered in compensation to the victim. Despite his conviction, McTernan disputes the severity of the charge and has lodged an appeal, scheduled for September 2026.
Following an accelerated misconduct hearing in May, a panel chaired by Debra Tedds ruled that McTernan’s actions constituted gross misconduct, breaching the police standards of professional behaviour. The panel emphasized that his conduct severely damaged public trust and confidence in the police service.

Ms. Tedds stated, “As a serving police officer, McTernan holds a position of responsibility. It is unacceptable for an officer to break the law, especially involving violence against women. Such behaviour profoundly undermines public confidence.”
While acknowledging McTernan’s previously exemplary career and long-standing positive contributions, the panel concluded that immediate dismissal was the only appropriate response. The ruling sends a clear message within West Midlands Police that violent and discreditable conduct will not be tolerated, whether on or off duty.
