Discover Exmouth Beach: The UK’s Best Beach Just Three Hours from Birmingham

Looking for the perfect beach escape this summer? The AA has revealed the UK’s top beaches based on sunshine hours, water quality, lifeguard presence, and visitor reviews. Topping the list is Exmouth Beach in Devon—a beautiful two-mile stretch of golden sand located just three hours from Birmingham.

Exmouth Beach serves as a gateway to the renowned Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its breathtaking scenery and rich history. Visitors can enjoy scenic walks along the coastline and explore this remarkable natural heritage.

The beach boasts a charming promenade lined with classic fairground rides, amusement arcades, and a variety of waterfront cafés, pubs, and ice-cream kiosks—perfect for families seeking a fun day out. Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to do here, with opportunities for kite surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and rock pooling, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Exe Estuary.

Dog owners will appreciate the designated dog-friendly areas, which are accessible year-round, though seasonal restrictions apply on the main beach.

Nearby, the picturesque Sidmouth Beach offers even more coastal beauty to explore.

The AA’s thorough analysis also took into account factors like average Google review scores, search volumes, parking costs, lifeguard services, RNLI lifeboat station proximity, water temperature, and July sunshine hours.

For those closer to the Midlands, Mablethorpe Beach in Lincolnshire was named the best beach in that region, located nearly three hours from Birmingham in the opposite direction from Exmouth.

According to an AA spokesperson: “Exmouth Beach tops our list with excellent water quality, a Google review score of 4.7, an RNLI lifeboat station nearby, and lifeguard patrols in summer. This two-mile sandy stretch provides ample space for families, designated dog-friendly zones, and a lively promenade perfect for watersports and seaside amusement.”

With multiple seafront car parks offering both short- and long-stay options, Exmouth Beach is easily accessible and ideal for a memorable day by the sea.
