Discover Croome: The National Trust Gem Just an Hour from Birmingham

Less than an hour’s drive from Birmingham lies Croome, a remarkable National Trust estate filled with surprises for visitors of all ages—and this weekend, you can explore it for free.

Situated near High Green in Worcestershire, Croome is home to Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s first major landscape design: sweeping parklands dotted with temples, follies, statues, and abundant wildlife framing serene lakeside views.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to admire at the RAF Defford Museum nestled on the grounds, revealing the secrets of the Second World War airbase. Here, over 2,000 service personnel and scientists once tested groundbreaking radar technology critical for countering wartime threats.

Families can enjoy the exceptional RAF-themed playground, featuring a control tower, scramble net, bunker, slides, and swings—an exciting tribute to the site’s military past. For younger visitors, there’s also a natural play area complete with a giant bird’s nest, mud kitchens, and den-building zones.

Visitors can engage further with the outdoors at the resource hub, where explorer kits, activity sheets, and sensory backpacks are available. The cosy reading corner offers a quiet retreat for book lovers amid the lively grounds.

At the heart of Croome stands the grand house, the vision of the 6th Earl of Coventry. Built in the 18th century in collaboration with famed architects Robert Adam and Capability Brown, the house now features engaging art installations, exhibitions, and historic collections.

Highlights extend beyond the house and museum. Recently restored features include a picturesque Chinese-style bridge, along with intriguing historic buildings and a diverse range of plants. After exploring, visitors can relax in the café housed within a restored RAF wartime building, or browse the on-site shop and plant centre.

Croome is participating in the National Lottery’s Open Week, offering free admission from March 7 to 14. Simply bring along a National Lottery ticket, Scratchcard, or Instant Win Game—digital entries should be downloaded in advance for smooth entry.

Just a short journey via the M5, Croome is easily accessible for a memorable day out. The estate’s address is Croome, near High Green, Worcester, Worcestershire, WR8 9DW.
