Digbeth’s Luna Springs Nightclub Faces Seven Strict Rules Following Double Stabbing Incident

Following a double stabbing at the Luna Springs nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham City Council has imposed seven strict licensing conditions on the venue. The violent incident occurred on Saturday, May 9, during a Cru2 drum and bass gathering, when two men were knifed around 7pm. Both victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized. A man in his 40s was arrested in connection with the attack and has since been released on bail while investigations continue.

Initially, Luna Springs’ license was suspended in response to the incident. However, with interim safety measures in place, the venue reopened swiftly. An expedited license review held on June 9 led to the formal adoption of seven key conditions, agreed upon between the venue’s license holder and West Midlands Police.

The Birmingham City Council licensing sub-committee reviewed police reports following thorough monitoring of Luna Springs since the stabbing. Police confirmed that the venue’s revised operating procedures have addressed their concerns and recommended the agreed conditions be enforced.

The conditions include:

  • Maintaining a detailed incident log, submitted within 24 hours of any incident, accessible to Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Police.

  • Implementing a Vulnerability Policy approved by West Midlands Police, with mandatory staff training completed before reopening.

  • Providing crime scene management training to all staff prior to work commencement, with refresher courses every 12 months, and keeping training records on site.

  • Assigning the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) or a designated manager to oversee security arrangements.

  • Submitting a monthly trading calendar to West Midlands Police for risk assessment of upcoming events, updated no later than the 15th of the preceding month.

Representatives for Venture Battersea Limited, the license holder with John Lear as DPS, assured the committee that significant investments have been made to enhance venue safety. The company acknowledged the necessity of additional measures to uphold licensing objectives following the serious incident.
