The Department for Transport has confirmed that the Summer Bus Fare Offer, which provides free bus travel for children aged five to 15 across much of England, will end at the close of August. This means families have only a few days remaining to take advantage of this scheme launched at the start of the month.
The initiative, introduced under the current administration led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham and former Chancellor Rachel Reeves, aims to ease the cost of travel for millions over the school holidays. It offers free travel on the majority of local bus services, including those operated or funded by local councils, tendered and franchised routes, and demand responsive transport services where arrangements have been made.
However, participation in the offer is voluntary. Some bus operators and services such as coaches, school-only routes, and certain airport services are not covered. In addition, local authorities may impose additional conditions like proof of age, specific travel cards, or accompanied travel for younger children.
Families are advised to check with their local bus operators or councils for precise details, as some areas may also extend the offer to children outside the 5 to 15 age range or provide alternative discounts.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander commented on the scheme, saying: “We’re giving families room to breathe from the cost-of-living squeeze. With free bus travel for 5 to 15-year olds and discounts on kids’ meals at restaurants, cinema tickets and theme parks, we’re helping people make the most of the time they have together for the school holidays.”
Passengers planning to benefit from the offer should verify service details and any additional requirements on their operator’s or local council’s website before travelling, as service variations and local rules may apply.
