Demolition Underway at Priory Square in Birmingham as Iconic Centre Faces End

The demolition of Priory Square shopping centre in Birmingham has commenced, signaling the end of a significant chapter for the local community. For over five decades, Priory Square was a vibrant hub, housing the much-loved Oasis Market and a variety of shops and restaurants that served the city’s alternative culture.

On March 25, 2025, the centre closed abruptly after an annual fire safety inspection revealed serious risks. Owners Hammerson informed traders they had only hours to vacate, citing the high fire hazard and the need for extensive electrical system upgrades that would require the centre to remain closed for a prolonged period.

Since the closure, the once bustling centre has remained empty. This week, demolition work began, marked by construction crews and heavy machinery moving onto the site. Hammerson confirmed the commencement of demolition and stated they remain in ongoing discussions with Birmingham City Council regarding the future development of the area.

Among the plans for the site is Martineau Galleries, a redevelopment project initially supported by the council in 2020. However, details on the next phase remain limited as stakeholders evaluate the best course forward.

The closure of Priory Square marks a bittersweet moment for Birmingham’s community, particularly for those connected to the Oasis Market, which operated for 54 years. Hammerson emphasized that safety was the primary concern driving the decision to close the centre indefinitely.

As demolition progresses, the city awaits updates on the future vision for this central piece of Birmingham’s urban landscape.
