Decision Due on Walsall College Plans for Former Department Store This Week

Walsall Council is set to decide this Thursday, November 27, on ambitious plans to transform the former Marks and Spencer department store on Park Street into a new Adult Learning Centre for Walsall College.

The 1970s building, which closed in 2018, will be repurposed to accommodate up to 750 students and 60 staff members, promising an enhanced educational experience in the heart of the town centre.

Situated within the Saddlers Centre — itself earmarked for upgrades under the council’s Connected Gateway project — the redevelopment aims to create a vibrant, modern learning environment. The ground floor will feature a reception area, nine classrooms, an ICT suite, a lecture theatre, social study spaces, a café, and interview rooms. Meanwhile, the first floor will include 19 classrooms, additional social and quiet learning zones, teaching and study pods, alongside staff facilities. Both floors will be accessible via stairs and lift.

However, the proposals have drawn two objections. Residents have raised concerns about potential privacy loss for nearby flats and the risk of increased loitering around the building.

Despite these concerns, Walsall Council’s planning officers have recommended approving the plans, seeing the project as a valuable addition to the local education infrastructure and town centre regeneration.
