The deadline for the Department for Work and Pensions’ qualifying week for the Winter Fuel Allowance has now passed, potentially affecting state pensioners’ eligibility for the upcoming payment.
The amount of the Winter Fuel Allowance depends on the recipient’s age, which is determined by their date of birth in relation to the specific qualifying week running from 21 to 27 September 2026. Pensioners born before 28 September 1946 are eligible to receive £300, while those born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960 will receive £200.
Under the new Labour government, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the Winter Fuel Allowance will continue to be provided over the winter months, reflecting a commitment to support households struggling with the rising cost of living amid ongoing global conflicts.

A government statement explains: “You will receive a letter in October or November outlining how much Winter Fuel Payment you will get, if eligible. If you do not receive a letter but believe you are entitled, check whether you need to claim. The amount paid is based on your birth date and circumstances during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026.”
However, pensioners with incomes exceeding £35,000 face the possibility of losing payments due to a HM Revenue and Customs clawback scheme.
Age UK advises: “If you or your partner claim Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the payment should be made automatically to the main claimant. If you have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before, or if you are receiving Universal Credit, you may need to apply. Those receiving Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit must also make a claim.”
Payments are expected to be made between mid-November and Christmas. Pensioners with enquiries or concerns about missing payments can contact the Winter Fuel Payment helpline on 0800 731 0160.
