Criminals Exploit Holidaymakers with Fake Villa Deals and Caravan Listings

Holidaymakers are being targeted by criminals employing new scams, including fake caravan rentals and unrealistically cheap villa deals, warns West Mercia Police. As more people book holidays online, fraudsters are quick to exploit the marketplace with enticing but fraudulent offers.

According to the police, these scams range from phantom listings for caravans and motorhomes to “too good to be true” holiday and villa rentals. Criminals use various tactics to trick people into handing over money and personal details.

West Mercia Police urge the public to be cautious when confronted with prices or offers that seem unusually low. “If it’s at a rock bottom price, ask yourself why,” the force advises.

Before committing to any bookings, travellers should thoroughly research the website or individual offering the accommodation, including reading reviews and verifying property addresses through Google Maps or official searches. Addresses can be copied from genuine listings to create convincing but fraudulent pages.

Booking through reputable travel companies affiliated with trade bodies like ABTA, ABTOT, or ATOL offers greater protection. If booking independently, confirm whether you’re dealing directly with the property owner, a licensed letting agent, or local tourist offices.

Always read terms and conditions carefully to understand what is included in your booking. Double-check travel and accommodation details, especially if there is a long gap between booking and arrival. Use secure payment methods, preferably paying by credit card for purchases over £100 to benefit from Section 75 protection.

Avoid clicking on unsolicited email links; instead, type website addresses directly into your browser. Look for the padlock symbol indicating a secure site before entering payment details.

By exercising caution and vigilance, holidaymakers can better protect themselves from falling victim to these evolving holiday scams.
