Mitchell Berrisford, a 27-year-old man from Knypersley, has been handed a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to intentionally strangling and battering his girlfriend. The court heard how Berrisford’s relationship, which began in 2020, became increasingly toxic and violent over time.
During one incident in Hanley, Berrisford physically dragged his girlfriend to the floor, sat on top of her, and strangled her to the point where she briefly lost consciousness. The second assault occurred outside her home, where an intoxicated Berrisford became aggressive after she refused to let him inside. Prosecutor Fiona Cortese described the relationship as controlling, with Berrisford monitoring her phone, making degrading remarks, and restricting her clothing choices.
Berrisford, who has five prior convictions and is awaiting an ADHD diagnosis, was described by his defense lawyer Barry White as a deeply anxious young man who struggles with decision-making and becomes panicked, especially under the influence of alcohol. White emphasized that Berrisford has relied heavily on his family for support and could benefit from probation intervention.

Recorder Robert Smith condemned Berrisford’s violent behavior as cowardly and warned him that this suspended sentence was his final chance. Alongside the suspended prison term, Berrisford was ordered to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activities and 40 hours of unpaid work. He was also issued a restraining order lasting five years to protect his victim.
Recorder Smith sternly cautioned: “If you and I meet again, you will be coming with your bag packed.”
