Coventry man jailed for eight years over attempts to arrange child abuse

A Coventry man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after his attempts to arrange the sexual abuse of children were uncovered.

Richard Stevenson, aged 39, from Waveley Road, was caught discussing his disturbing fantasies involving very young children on an online forum. He also shared indecent images during these conversations, unaware that he was communicating with an undercover police officer.

Stevenson was arrested on 2 May this year while sitting in a van in Coventry. He subsequently admitted to attempting to arrange a child sex offence, as well as making and distributing indecent images of children.

At Warwick Crown Court on Friday, 4 September, Stevenson received an eight-year prison sentence. He will also spend an additional two years on licence, be placed on the sexual harm prevention order for 18 years, and remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Detective Constable John Marsh from the West Midlands Police Major Crime Unit described Stevenson’s criminal behaviour as “simply appalling,” adding that he was resolute in his attempts to commit sexual abuse against children. DC Marsh emphasised the police commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and using all available resources to prevent such crimes.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police reiterated that the investigation led by the Major Crime Unit uncovered Stevenon’s detailed plans, including his desire to find a partner to participate in the abuse and his sharing of abusive videos. The investigation culminated in his arrest and eventual conviction.

Stevenson’s imprisonment serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to safeguard children from abuse and bring offenders to justice.
