Coventry Insider Reveals What Birmingham City Can Expect from Jonathan Panzo

Birmingham City’s acquisition of defender Jonathan Panzo on transfer deadline day marks a strategic and promising conclusion to an active window.

Manager Chris Davies sought to strengthen the centre-back position, and Panzo fits the bill with his Championship experience, left-footed versatility, and an ideal age profile compared to recent recruits.

At 25, Panzo once shone as a youth prospect at Chelsea but has yet to fully realize his potential, explaining his journey to Rio Ave before catching Birmingham’s attention.

Panzo boasts 34 Championship appearances across three clubs, with the bulk—29 matches—coming during the 2022/23 season on loan at Coventry City.

That season was arguably the most fruitful of his career. Coventry, propelled by striker Viktor Gyokeres, only narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion after an intense playoff final against Luton Town at Wembley, with Panzo playing a key defensive role.

CoventryLive journalist Andy Turner highlights Panzo’s impact: “Arriving from Forest, he was considered a Premier League prospect but struggled to cement a starting spot initially, making 25 starts and five substitute appearances throughout the loan spell.”

“Primarily featuring as a left-sided centre-back in a back three, he shared duties early on with Callum Doyle. However, his playing time diminished in the latter half of the season as Doyle secured a regular role alongside Luke McNally and Kyle McFadzean."

Turner notes that while Panzo’s Championship experience was limited, his attributes stood out. “His physicality and athleticism make him a front-foot defender who competes hard and reads the game reasonably well. When on form, he impressively brings the ball out from defense and carries it forward.”

At Birmingham, Panzo begins as a backup option to Christoph Klarer and Phil Neumann, especially with Jack Robinson sidelined by injury. Nonetheless, the frequency of changes in Klarer’s defensive partners this season suggests Panzo has a real shot at earning regular minutes.

With determination and his promising skill set, Panzo aims to become the fourth partner alongside Klarer this season, hoping to solidify his place in the Blues’ backline.
