Council digs trenches at Birmingham park to deter travellers

In a bid to prevent repeated unauthorised encampments, Birmingham City Council has recently dug trenches and formed a bund across the entrance of Chinn Brook Recreation Ground in Yardley Wood.

For several years, convoys of caravans have been driving onto the park, establishing illegal encampments that have prompted frequent evictions and costly clean-ups. These incursions have caused disruption as groups often move from one public space to another in a continuing cycle.

The recently introduced earthworks are part of a series of short-term measures designed to restrict access to larger vehicles and caravans, particularly in the lead-up to the Bank Holiday weekend.

Local councillors Joe Peacock and Chris Garghan of Billesley Greens welcomed the temporary measures but emphasised the need for more permanent solutions. They noted multiple incidents this summer where residents felt intimidated and unsafe using the park. Volunteer groups tasked with cleaning have also been strained by the volume of rubbish left behind.

The trenches have been specifically designed to allow access for council maintenance vehicles such as lawn mowers, while hindering larger unauthorised vehicles. Concrete blocks and bollards are also reportedly on order to further restrict access through the gate.

Moreover, discussions are ongoing regarding comprehensive improvements to defences across 32 parks and green spaces in the city. Members of the public can expect to see these plans shared once finalised.

The most recent unauthorised encampment occurred on 18 August, involving approximately six caravans, along with a horsebox and horses driving onto the site.

Local resident and regular litter picker John Pedley expressed hope that the new measures will deter future incursions, stressing the negative impact on both wildlife and the local community.

The council has been contacted for further comment on the proposals and measures.
