Cotswold Village Keeps Christmas Lights On to Brighten January

The picturesque Cotswold village of Broadway is spreading extra cheer this winter by keeping its Christmas lights shining well into January. Known for its charming tree-lined high street and honey-stone boutiques, Broadway’s continued illumination promises to lift spirits during the typically gloomy post-holiday weeks.

Locals have decided to leave the festive lights adorning the red chestnut trees and Georgian architecture on until February 2nd—a trial extension aimed at brightening up the dark evenings. A spokesman for Broadway Cotswolds shared the news on Facebook: “The beautiful Broadway festive lights will remain on in the evenings until 2nd February. The lights on the Remembrance Tree of Light were switched off on 6th January as usual.”

The community has warmly welcomed the initiative. One resident expressed, “Excellent news! Such a lift in dark January days. And 2nd February is the real end of Christmas tide!” Another commented on the magical atmosphere the lights create in frosty weather, saying, “They look even more magical when it’s snowing and frosty – this will make the village even more unique than it already is.” Some have even proposed keeping the lights on year-round to maintain the village’s enchanting ambiance.

Not everyone agrees, as one resident raised concerns about traditional superstitions around leaving Christmas decorations up past the Twelve Days of Christmas. Despite this, the overall sentiment remains positive, with many appreciating the extra warmth and light during the cold winter months.

Beyond the glimmering lights, Broadway offers cozy pubs like The Swan Inn and Broadway Hotel, perfect for warming up by an open fire after a stroll through town. Tea lovers can enjoy treats at charming spots such as Hunters Tea Room, Leaf & Bean, or Morris and Brown Café. Shoppers will find unique gifts at local favorites like Whatever the Weather, Wild at Heart, Riki Tiki, and Royle Collective, while Betty & Violet offers antiques and vintage treasures.

For those inspired to extend their visit, nearby accommodations like Top Cottage and The Granary at Lane End Farm provide comfortable stays, with Top Cottage even featuring a wood-fired hot tub.

Easily accessible from Birmingham by car or train, Broadway invites visitors to experience a truly magical winter escape, brightened by a festive glow that lingers long after the holidays.
