Contrasting Crime Rates in Adjacent Birmingham Neighbourhoods: Aston and Nechells

In north Birmingham, two neighbouring communities tell very different stories about crime and safety. Aston and Nechells sit side by side, yet their crime statistics reveal a striking disparity.

Aston consistently ranks as one of Birmingham’s highest-crime areas, surpassed only by policing zones like Lozells and East Handsworth. Over the 12 months leading to January, police recorded more than 2,300 violent and sexual offences in Aston. These serious crimes encompass murder, robbery, rape, sexual assaults, and domestic abuse, painting a troubling picture of violence in the area.

In contrast, Nechells, just a few streets away, is among the bottom 10 areas in the city for crime rates. With only 811 incidents reported during the same period, Nechells offers a much safer environment for its residents, despite facing similar challenges related to poverty and deprivation.

While Aston’s population of approximately 24,000 residents is larger than Nechells’ 16,000, this difference does not fully explain the gap in crime figures. Both communities have similar socioeconomic backgrounds, making the contrasting crime rates all the more notable.

Aston’s elevated crime levels have been linked to specific local issues, including violent gang disputes and drug-related turf wars. The area has unfortunately witnessed numerous shootings and stabbings over the years. Notable incidents include a shooting near Villa Park in October 2024, where a bystander was used as a “human shield,” and another attack outside FJ Lounge on Bickford Road in March last year, which left two people hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Despite the challenges, Aston remains near the top of Birmingham’s crime rankings alongside other high-crime communities such as Lozells, East Handsworth, and South Yardley. Meanwhile, Nechells stands out as one of the more peaceful neighbourhoods in the city, highlighting how crime rates can vary dramatically, even within close proximity.
