As the seasons change and summer sunshine gives way to autumn, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the strength and spirit of Birmingham’s communities, especially those dedicated to supporting children and families.
At Brummie Mummies, we take pride in celebrating local parents who have turned challenges into opportunities through their ‘Kitchen Table’ success stories. Many of these parents have started new ventures post-parenthood, using their experiences to benefit others around them.
For example, Julie Hetherington has created a welcoming environment serving 1,500 families, Emma Hewitt supports women in achieving recognition through awards, and Karen Byrne-Smith utilised her redundancy funds to set up baby classes that support young families.

Another inspiring figure is Jenny Charman, founder of Kids2Kids Preloved CIC in Solihull. Last Halloween, Jenny collaborated with fellow shopkeepers on Oxhill Road, Shirley, to organise a Spooky Trail charity event. Originally expecting only a few families, the event attracted over 200 children, resulting in plans to expand the event this year.
In Sutton Coldfield, Rachel Dutta Choudhury from YMCA is pioneering a project aimed at encouraging children to socialise more. Post-pandemic, many young people are facing challenges with self-image and tend to spend increasing amounts of time alone. To address this, youth club leaders have created an online group where children can comfortably make new friends. The goal is to gradually encourage face-to-face interactions once friendships have developed. This innovative approach shows promise and could serve as a model for other communities.
Recent research reveals that 63% of Brits wish to see their loved ones more often, and 39% feel too busy to connect as much as they’d like. Among millennials, this desire rises to 57%. In response, Lindt has partnered with Macmillan Cancer Support to offer free coffees and chocolates at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in Cannock this weekend through the ‘Pause for a Good Cause’ campaign - a perfect chance to enjoy a treat while connecting with others.
For small business owners, there’s exciting news: The Fort Shopping Park is hosting a Christmas market and inviting local companies to participate-a great opportunity for businesses to reach new customers.
Community events continue at the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, which is hosting a Festival of Light lantern parade for Diwali. This beautiful event promises to bring people together on a chilly November evening.
Additionally, Northfield Shopping Centre is set to open a new play centre featuring sand play, soft play, sensory experiences, a party room, and a family café-adding more family-friendly facilities to the area.
Whatever your plans this week, consider reaching out to someone in your community. Small gestures of connection can truly brighten someone’s day.
With warm regards,
