As England gears up for the World Cup, fans are being warned that a common pub celebration habit could come with a hefty price. Tossing pint glasses into the air during celebrations—a popular way to mark goals or victories—could result in fines of up to £5,000, especially if the act causes injury. Legal experts emphasize that this reckless behavior could even lead to prison sentences depending on the circumstances.
Under the law, assault includes any intentional or reckless act that causes someone to fear or suffer immediate unlawful violence. Throwing glassware is considered reckless and could qualify if it leads to harm.
The government has extended pub opening hours during the tournament to support local hospitality venues, which are under significant financial pressure. Recent figures show that 2,077 hospitality businesses—including 540 pubs, 963 restaurants, and 574 hotels—are at risk of closure due to rising business rates and operating costs.

For instance, the average hotel is facing an increase of £28,900 in business rates next year alone, with cumulative rises reaching £205,200 by 2029. In response, the government is launching a £61 million fund to help local communities purchase and preserve their valued pubs and hospitality venues.
Communities Secretary Steve Reed announced the new scheme on June 16 as part of broader efforts to support the hospitality sector. “The Government has already extended pub hours this summer and is committed to keeping the good times rolling,” Reed said. “This fund empowers locals to save their beloved pubs from permanent closure.”
He encouraged fans to support their local pubs during the World Cup, describing it as a patriotic duty. With celebrations in full swing, fans should be mindful of their actions to avoid costly fines and preserve the lively spirit of their local pubs.
