Phil Neumann faces pressure to maintain his high performance levels following Birmingham City’s deadline-day signing of centre-back Jonathan Panzo from Rio Ave. Manager Chris Davies has underscored the importance of Neumann’s consistency as competition within the squad intensifies.
Neumann has started 24 out of Birmingham’s 30 Championship matches this season, often partnering Christoph Klarer in central defence. However, the addition of Panzo, a left-footed defender with Championship experience, along with the expected return of left-back Jack Robinson from injury, offers Davies tactical flexibility. This may enable Klarer to revert to his preferred right side, potentially challenging Neumann’s place in the lineup.
Despite this, Neumann’s recent form has been impressive. Davies praised his adaptation to English football, noting that last weekend marked one of Neumann’s best displays since joining from Hannover 96. “Phil has improved steadily,” Davies said, highlighting his physicality, pace, and decision-making as key strengths.

“The Bundesliga II is a good benchmark for the Championship in terms of physicality and direct play,” Davies explained. “Phil has transitioned from playing mostly in a back three, and with the intense scheduling and style of the Championship, his development has been evident.”
Davies emphasized the fundamentals, stating, “What matters most is winning your headers, staying physical, keeping things simple, and using your pace to recover quickly. Phil has shown he can do this at a high level.”
Looking ahead, Davies made it clear that Neumann must keep up this standard to retain his place, especially with Jack Robinson’s imminent return ready to compete for minutes. Regarding Panzo’s signing, Davies highlighted the 25-year-old’s Championship experience—having played for Nottingham Forest, Coventry, and Cardiff—as well as his versatility, character, and quality on the ball. “Jonathan is eager to earn his place, and we believe he’s a valuable addition to strengthen our squad,” Davies concluded.
With competition heating up, Phil Neumann will need to continue delivering commanding performances to secure his role in Birmingham City’s defence.
