Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has raised questions about the futures of key players Kai Wagner and Kyogo Furuhashi following their absence from Wednesday’s 3-0 friendly victory over Solihull Moors.
Neither Wagner nor Kyogo featured in the matchday squad, joining four other notable absentees. While Ethan Laird and Marvin Ducksch are sidelined with injuries, Patrick Roberts is out with illness, and Jay Stansfield remains unfit to play, Wagner and Kyogo’s absence was linked to different circumstances.
Speaking to BirminghamLive after the game, Davies confirmed that their omission was not due to fitness concerns. “Kai and Kyogo, things will be clearer with those two in the next couple of days. There’s been a few things happening in the background and that will become clearer in the next 48 hours but tonight wasn’t a night to include them,” Davies explained.

Wagner, who joined Birmingham City from Philadelphia Union in January, quickly established himself as a key player, starting 16 games in the latter half of the Championship season. Despite competition from Alex Cochrane and the return of Lee Buchanan, he appeared poised to start the new campaign as first choice.
Kyogo, who arrived with high expectations from Rennes, scored just three goals in 31 appearances last season. Reports indicate Birmingham were open to offers for the striker during the January transfer window, and he has since fallen down the pecking order under Davies.
With the manager suggesting developments to come soon, the club’s supporters may be bracing for significant changes ahead in the summer transfer window.
