Chris Davies Reflects on Birmingham City’s Heartbreaking Late Defeat at QPR

Birmingham City’s struggles on the road continued as Queens Park Rangers snatched a late winner in the 96th minute, handing the Blues their seventh defeat in 11 Championship away matches. The decisive goal came from Kieran Morgan, leaving Birmingham empty-handed after a hard-fought encounter at Loftus Road.

Chris Davies openly acknowledged the pain of the narrow loss, which came just moments after Patrick Roberts had leveled the score in the 93rd minute, canceling out Jimmy Dunne’s early opener for QPR.

“This is a painful defeat for us—conceding so late in the game is as tough as it gets,” Davies admitted. “It’s very disappointing to lose right at the death like this.”

Reflecting on the game, Davies pointed to a sluggish first half as the turning point. “We were too slow in the opening 45 minutes. The first goal hurt us more than the last one because it forced us to chase the game. It was a sloppy goal at a stage when the game was pretty even.”

Davies described the match as a scrappy affair with little quality football from either side. “We needed to go into halftime level at 0-0 and then build from there, but we weren’t able to do that, and it left us with too much to do.”

Birmingham’s dismal away form remains a significant challenge, with just eight points accumulated from 11 matches on the road—one of the worst records in the Championship. The team continues to rely heavily on a strong home record but faces mounting pressure to turn around their results away from St Andrew’s.

“We must improve our performances on the road as well as at home. We can’t expect to win every game at home, so consistency across all matches is vital,” said Davies. “It’s a long season with many tests ahead. Tonight’s result is another challenge for the squad, testing their mindset and resilience. To succeed, we have to overcome these kinds of setbacks.”
