Birmingham City delivered an impressive performance in their pre-season friendly against Barcelona, culminating in a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win. The match at a packed St Andrew’s was made all the more special by the return of Jude Bellingham, who joined the club’s celebrated academy and debuted a full season at just 16 years of age.
Despite Barcelona fielding a young side without over a dozen World Cup players, including eight members of the Spain squad that recently won the tournament, the game was packed with thrilling moments. August Priske and Jhon Solis scored during regular play, while goalkeeper James Beadle made two crucial saves to secure the shoot-out victory for the Blues.
One of the highlights came early on when Bellingham was spotted taking his seat in the directors' box within the Kop Stand. At half-time, the Real Madrid star proudly donned Birmingham City’s new first-team shirt to a rapturous reception from the fans, further energising the atmosphere at the ground.

Birmingham City’s manager, Chris Davies, expressed his delight at Bellingham’s presence: “It was excellent. I heard a whisper that he might be coming earlier in the week, and I mean he’s Birmingham’s favourite son really. What he’s achieved already in football is quite incredible. For me he’s the ultimate footballer in terms of what I love in a football player and the fact that he’s here and a supporter of this club, and the affection the fans have for him makes it really special.”
Davies added, “He could have easily sat at home or been in some incredible hotel somewhere around the world on his summer holidays, but he chose to be here, so that says a lot.”
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Davies commented, “It was a special occasion regardless of the result, having a club like Barcelona, who we have huge respect for. We knew they wouldn’t be full strength with the team they were bringing, but some of their top talents featured.
“I wanted the players to be aggressive, be brave, and show that we are building a team. We achieved a lot of that tonight. I thought we deserved the eventual draw, and importantly, we got through the match without injuries, which is very pleasing.”
The thrilling encounter and Bellingham’s heartfelt tribute to his boyhood club underline Birmingham City’s ambitions and the close bond between the club and its former academy star.
