Chris Davies Praises Jay Stansfield’s Fiery Edge but Warns He Must Stay Disciplined

Jay Stansfield is one of the standout footballers in the Championship, known for his relentless energy and fearless approach to the game. Birmingham City’s talisman showed this once again in their recent win over Watford.

Stansfield’s high-intensity style is hard to miss. Throughout the match, especially as Birmingham held a 1-0 lead approaching halftime, he relentlessly pressed Watford’s Jeremy Ngakia deep into his own half. No one on the Blues bench presses with such determination as Stansfield.

One notable moment arose from a Watford free-kick. Stansfield subtly nudged Ngakia from behind — firm enough to assert his presence but careful not to draw a referee’s card. This small act sparked a heated reaction from Watford’s players, who rushed to their teammate’s aid, embroiling themselves in a scuffle initiated by Stansfield’s provocation.

Despite his fiery involvement, Stansfield expertly manages to keep his aggression within permissible limits. Remarkably, he has never been sent off, even though his game often includes verbal exchanges and physical tussles. He’s known to provoke opponents without crossing the line, a trait Birmingham’s manager Nathan Jones attributes to “something-housery.”

While the Watford players were still unsettled, Stansfield used the distraction to glide past defenders and set up Demarai Gray’s decisive goal. His season record — nine goals and three assists — is impressive for the 23-year-old forward.

Chris Davies commended Stansfield’s blend of emotional energy and professionalism. “Jay plays with that emotional energy, and you never want to take that away from him,” Davies said. “You see him sprinting back in the second half to cover for a teammate out of position. His attitude and energy are vital for the team. He showed great quality on the second goal with a sharp move and an accurate pass to Dimmy. He plays with an edge and aggression that’s excellent.”

Though Stansfield has avoided red cards, he is no stranger to bookings. He received a yellow card against Watford, placing him at risk of suspension for the upcoming match at Southampton, where he and captain Christoph Klarer are both one caution away from a one-match ban.

For Birmingham City and their supporters, maintaining the balance between Stansfield’s fiery edge and discipline will be crucial in the battle ahead.
