Chris Davies Praises Birmingham City’s Midfield Duo for Dominating Watford

Chris Davies has hailed Birmingham City’s midfield pairing of Tommy Doyle and Paik Seung-ho, applauding their commanding performance in the 2-1 victory over Watford. The duo’s impressive partnership was pivotal in securing a fourth consecutive home win for the Blues, who now sit seventh in the Championship.

Paik, who netted his fourth goal of the season against the Hornets, has significantly improved his scoring record after managing just one goal in League One last season. Davies highlighted Paik’s remarkable finishing ability, noting, “I’ve definitely spoken to Paik about how he can score more goals since I arrived. Coaches tell me he’s an excellent finisher with both feet, demonstrated during pre-match shooting drills.”

The Watford midfield, featuring Hector Kyprianou and Imran Louza, was ultimately outmatched by Doyle and Paik’s energy and skill. “Winning the ball is important, but Paik’s ability to quickly seize space and shoot makes him a real threat. He’s two-footed, quick, and strong,” Davies added. Despite suffering a knee injury from a tough challenge by Kyprianou—who received only a yellow card—Paik showed resilience. “Most players with his shoulder issue would still be sidelined. He’s exceptional for us,” said Davies.

Doyle’s contribution also earned praise, with Davies describing his awareness and versatility: “Tommy can switch play and move the ball forward quickly. He’s defensively disciplined, which was vital in our second goal when he closed down Maamma, won the ball, and launched our attack.”

Davies emphasized the importance of defensive commitment from midfielders: “I always tell the players it’s defensive first. You have to be consistent because we trust your skills going forward.”
