Chris Davies, manager of Birmingham City, has made it clear that sentiment will not influence his team’s approach when Jordan James returns to St Andrew’s Stadium with Wolverhampton Wanderers today. This West Midlands derby marks James’s first appearance at the Blues’ home ground since departing two years ago.
The 22-year-old midfielder has begun his tenure at Wolves impressively, including scoring against Stoke City, and looks set to make his starting debut against his boyhood club.
Davies spoke positively about his brief stint working with the Wales international during pre-season in the summer of 2024 but emphasised the professional rivalry now in place. “He played in every pre-season game after I came in, then left the day before the season started,” Davies said. “That was all amicable; there was an understanding he was going to move on. I just wanted to win all my pre-season matches!”

The Blues boss continued: “We wished him well as a person. However, there’s no time for sentiment now. He’s a Wolves player and we have to prepare our team for the challenge that brings.”
While Wolves have enjoyed early success with two wins from their first four Championship fixtures, earning seven points to Birmingham’s six, Davies remains measured about the timing of the fixture. He noted that Wolves are still integrating some players who were initially expected to be transferred during the summer window.
“I’ve been analysing Wolves closely-they play a distinctive 4-3-3 style under their new manager Cesar Peixoto, who is clearly imposing his vision on the team,” Davies explained. “They have quality players, without a doubt, but our advantage is the cohesion we have built over the past couple of years.”
Davies added, “Derbies like this are about more than tactics or personnel; these matches carry an intensity that transcends the usual game. It’s about being mentally prepared and tuned in to the occasion.”
Acknowledging Wolves’ status as strong promotion contenders alongside West Ham, Davies expressed respect for their experienced squad, which features notable internationals such as former England right-back Kieran Trippier, Brazilian talent Andre, and Mexico striker Raul Jimenez.
“Most would expect Wolves to finish in the top two by May, given their squad depth and Premier League experience,” said Davies. “But their real task is turning these talented individuals into a cohesive team. We respect their quality and their club, but come matchday, it’s about the result.”
