Birmingham City are taking a measured approach with defender Lee Buchanan as he resumes training following a year-long knee injury layoff. Buchanan sustained the injury in a match against Blackpool that ended 0-0 in late 2024, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season.
During his absence, Alex Cochrane has established himself as the first-choice left-back, and the arrival of Kai Wagner adds further competition for the position. As Buchanan progresses toward full fitness, a loan move might appear to be a logical next step to gain match experience. However, manager Chris Davies is prioritizing Buchanan’s recovery over any immediate transfer plans.
“Lee has started light training with the team, which is excellent news,” Davies said. “Everyone is pleased to have him back. Our main focus is on helping Lee rebuild his strength and fitness. We haven’t yet discussed loans or transfers because the priority is getting him back to full fitness and seeing how he progresses day by day.”

Davies also highlighted that Buchanan and teammate Scott Wright have both hit their rehabilitation milestones ahead of schedule. “They’ve achieved all their targets so far, and now it’s about continuing the momentum.”
The club is committed to supporting Buchanan’s cautious comeback, with the hope that he can reclaim a role in the squad once fully fit.
