Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has expressed confidence that the club still has the financial flexibility to complete important signings before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. While the Blues have added six players so far this window, their starting lineup appears less strong on paper following the departures of Kai Wagner and influential winger Ibrahim Osman.
Kristoffer Lund has been brought in to fill the void left by Wagner, who has returned to Philadelphia Union after struggling to settle locally. Meanwhile, the club is still actively targeting a replacement for Osman, who has gone back to parent club Brighton. Davies has indicated that re-signing Osman has become unlikely, despite him being the club’s top target at the start of pre-season.
The Blues are seeking a left-winger capable of advancing the ball through midfield and attack, as well as a new number 10 to bolster creativity. Notably, none of the latest signings – apart from last season’s loanees James Beadle and Jhon Solis – have yet started a Championship game, highlighting the challenge in strengthening the first team.

“I’ve said all along that we need to get to a position where we feel that we have a better squad than we did last year,” Davies commented. “We finished 10th and no matter what anyone says, I think that was a good first season back in the Championship, which is a very unforgiving division.
“The idea is to go one better this season. The chance to finish in the top eight and push for a play-off spot is there. To do that, it’s logical to make sure the squad is stronger than last year, making those aspirations realistic.
“We have had a few key players move on, but we’ve also signed replacements. However, it’s crucial that we feel we are genuinely strengthening. There are still five or six days left in the window with activity ongoing, and hopefully, by Tuesday night, we can say we’re well set for the season ahead.”
When asked about the club’s financial capacity to secure high-quality players, especially after setting aside funds to re-sign Osman, Davies replied, “I believe so. I don’t know all the exact details, but I’m hopeful. I’ve been clear about what we need for some time now, and when the deadline arrives, I want us to be in a strong position.
“There are many moving parts – agents, players, and clubs involved – but hopefully we can make meaningful progress in the coming days because time is of the essence.”
Regarding the current squad, Davies has expressed a desire to retain winger Patrick Roberts despite his limited recent appearances. However, some players, including Marvin Ducksch, have attracted interest from elsewhere and could leave before the window shuts. “There might be one or two departures, and things can move quickly,” Davies said, “but it’s important to keep hold of our best players, and that is my intention.”
