Chris Davies Faces Defensive Dilemma as Jonathan Panzo Impresses at Birmingham City

Birmingham City’s defensive lineup is at a crossroads following Jonathan Panzo’s impressive debut performance on Sunday. Signed from Rio Ave during the winter transfer window, Panzo’s arrival bolstered the Blues’ central defense options to four, sparking a fresh competition for starting positions.

Despite his recent transfer, the 25-year-old Panzo wasted no time making an impact, showcasing composure and skill against Leeds United. Having accumulated 34 Championship appearances with Nottingham Forest, Coventry City, and Cardiff, Panzo demonstrated readiness and confidence that few anticipated so soon.

His commanding presence was notably complemented by Blues captain Christoph Klarer, who returned to his favored right-sided center-back position with commanding authority. Klarer’s assured play paired seamlessly with Panzo, who operated confidently on the left side.

This strong partnership raises an important question for Birmingham City manager Chris Davies: will he maintain Phil Neumann in the lineup or reward Panzo with a league debut in the upcoming match at Norwich City?

On this week’s Keep Right On Podcast, Brian Dick and Alex Dicken explored Davies’ selection challenge:

Brian Dick observed, “Klarer looked genuinely happy back on the right side, and it’s clear Davies has had reservations about Neumann this season. Neumann shows effort and some physical improvement, but inconsistencies remain. It’s a very close call between Panzo and Neumann.”

Alex Dicken added, “Neumann will likely keep his place for now, but with Jack Robinson’s return, Davies has two left-footed center-backs, a formation he tends to prefer. It wouldn’t take much for Neumann to be dropped again, as we’ve seen previously this season.”

As the Blues prepare for their next fixture, Chris Davies faces a crucial decision that could redefine Birmingham City’s defensive framework.
