Chris Davies Explains Jay Stansfield Sacrifice and Why Marvin Ducksch Stayed On vs West Brom

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies showed his trust in Marvin Ducksch’s recent form by keeping the striker on against West Bromwich Albion, despite a quiet performance. The decision surprised some supporters, especially when Jay Stansfield was substituted in the 58th minute to make way for August Priske.

Although Ducksch struggled to find his rhythm, his impressive recent run—five goals and two assists in eight matches—earned him continued game time. He came close to rewarding that faith when his 18-yard snapshot was brilliantly saved by Albion’s goalkeeper Max O’Leary. However, a few uncharacteristic loose touches kept him from making a decisive impact.

Commenting on the triple substitution that introduced Priske alongside Ducksch, Davies said, “Marvin has often produced big moments for us late in games. Jay was playing well and working hard pressing the opposition, but sometimes it’s about managing energy levels. It wasn’t about Jay’s performance; it was more about injecting freshness and offering something different upfront.”

Priske nearly scored with a stoppage-time goal that was ultimately disallowed, while Spanish winger Carlos Vicente shone as the standout substitute. Davies praised Vicente’s contribution: “He brought speed, intent, and linked up well with Tomoki. Rotating our wingers is key, as each offers different strengths. Vicente’s impact lifted the team.”

Davies’ tactical adjustments reflected a blend of managing player energy and maintaining attacking threat in a hard-fought goalless draw.
