Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has expressed cautious optimism regarding the possibility of re-signing Ibrahim Osman, although the club remains prepared for alternative outcomes.
Osman, a 21-year-old Ghanaian, has impressed during his return to Brighton & Hove Albion’s pre-season preparations. Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, has praised the youngster’s performances, which has led Birmingham City to consider the likelihood that Brighton may retain him, especially with their upcoming Europa Conference League campaign. Brighton face Tromso in the first leg of the play-off tonight, which could determine Osman’s involvement in regular European football this season.
Davies acknowledged that the chances of securing Osman again appear slimmer than before. “I haven’t heard anything different,” Davies said. “I’m a big fan, he did great for us. He’s obviously made a positive impression back there at Brighton.

“I don’t know definitively until the window shuts, you never quite know, but he’s definitely a player that did really well and we’ll see how it goes in the next 10 days.”
Last season, Birmingham City incorporated seven loan players at various times, but currently, James Beadle is the only player on a temporary deal, with all other new signings being permanent.
Davies explained the club’s preference for permanent signings, emphasising a cautious approach to loans. “When you take too many loans it’s not good. They’re not your player and not really here for Birmingham City as such.
“I’m pleased actually that we haven’t had to do too many loans and I wouldn’t want to do too many.
“Now we’re in a position where we could and it would be comfortable and suitable. We have options and we’re working hard. The recruitment team are working hard like every club at the moment.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty there with different things, but we have to look back on it at the end and say we’re stronger than we started, then I’ll be happy.”
As the transfer window nears closing, Birmingham City continue to evaluate their squad and potential additions, balancing the benefits of permanent acquisitions with the flexibility that loan deals may offer in the final days.
