Birmingham City are poised to bolster their squad with the imminent signing of German left-back Kai Wagner from MLS side Philadelphia Union. The 28-year-old defender, who was recently named in the 2025 MLS Team of the Season alongside Lionel Messi, will be the club’s first acquisition of the January transfer window.
Manager Chris Davies has long expressed the need for competition at left-back to challenge Alex Cochrane, and Wagner’s arrival is expected to strengthen that position significantly. Speaking after Birmingham’s 3-0 defeat to Watford, Davies confirmed the deal is close to being finalized.
“There’s a very slim possibility of that [Wagner joining before the Coventry match],” Davies told BirminghamLive. “I’m not sure on the actual paperwork and everything else like that, and obviously their season finished some time ago so he hasn’t been playing, but officially that might be possible.”

While the transfer isn’t yet sealed, the club and their supporters are hopeful that Wagner will be available to make his debut against Coventry City on Sunday, providing much-needed depth in defense.
