Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has expressed unwavering confidence in striker Kyogo Furuhashi, despite the Japanese forward’s ongoing goal drought that now stretches to 12 Championship games.
During Tuesday’s commanding 4-0 victory over Millwall, Kyogo had two significant opportunities to break his scoring drought. First, he was denied in a one-on-one encounter by Millwall goalkeeper Max Crocombe. Shortly after, he directed Patrick Roberts’ cross just wide of the post. Although the goals have yet to come, Davies believes Kyogo’s contributions and potential remain strong.
Since arriving from Rennes in the club’s most expensive summer transfer, Kyogo has faced criticism for his missed chances. However, both the manager and fans continue to show strong support. Following the match, supporters in The Tilton chanted Kyogo’s name during the team’s lap of honour, a gesture met with fist pumps from the striker himself.

“That means a lot because it shows they recognize how much effort he puts in and that they believe in him,” Davies said. “He gets more chances than anyone else. He’s clever, his movement and runs are excellent, and I’ve said before, those goals will come.”
Davies also highlighted Kyogo’s development in training and his adjustment to English football. “He didn’t play much before joining us in France. He’s building his confidence and giving us plenty when he comes on the pitch,” he added.
Currently, Kyogo is often used as an impact substitute, as Davies has favored a forward pairing of Jay Stansfield and Marvin Ducksch. Despite the frustration that surely accompanies his goal drought, Davies remains optimistic about Kyogo’s future contributions.
“Any striker goes through phases like this, but Kyogo is focused, professional, and experienced. I’m not worried in the slightest,” Davies concluded. “We are fortunate to have him, and I’m confident he’s going to start scoring goals soon.”
