Birmingham City have demonstrated a distinct ability to excel in high-intensity, end-to-end matches during their first seven Championship fixtures this season. Notably, encounters against Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Norwich City have featured numerous goal-scoring opportunities, with the Blues holding their ground amidst the fierce competition.
Manager Chris Davies attributes this resilience to the team’s tactical approach, which includes effective man-to-man pressing leading to fast and open games. “I would rather us be in those games,” Davies explained. “I focused on recruiting a physical team. They’ve all got physical capacity and they can move distances at high intensity. I think we’re set up for the game when it’s open.
“I don’t want us to try and score the perfect goal and be 85 percent possession, just control, control, control, I don’t think that’s going to suit us.

“There’s definitely been a shift and I’m comfortable when the game is open but I still think we can be better in a few areas.”
Today’s opponents, Middlesbrough, will encounter a noticeably different Birmingham City side compared to the one they faced in March. On that occasion, two early goals from Matt Targett gave Middlesbrough a clear advantage, with the Blues struggling to match their quality both in possession and in defence.
Birmingham no longer prioritise playing out from the back; instead, the team aims to overcome opposition presses by going over them rather than attempting to play through. Reflecting on the previous match and the team’s development since then, Davies noted: “It was a strange game. We started really well, one ball over the top, Targett goes in and scores, and it rocked us to be honest. Then another goal… anyway, stylistically we’ve been missing out the low build-up more. For us to keep developing, we need to find the moments to control games a little bit and there’s times we could be calmer when we win the ball back, and we’re going to need those moments. But against teams that are really aggressive in the press and very good at it like Middlesbrough, you have to be smart with it and use your strengths.
“We have got to have a plan to beat their press and we have been doing that well with trying to play over the pressure and go from there.
“We don’t just want to be one-dimensional. We want to be a really good team and I think we’ve improved our attacking output – more box threat, more shots, more goals, more set pieces – and the one bit we have to keep improving is when we can push a team back and keep them in their half for a little bit longer.”
