Chip Shops Adapt as Cost of Fish and Chips Approaches £12

The average price of a portion of haddock and chips across the UK has risen to £10.29, with cod and chips reaching an average of £11.41, according to a new report by industry body Seafish. There are approximately 7,210 fish and chip shops operating nationwide, but many are feeling the strain from increasing costs for fish, potatoes, oil, and energy.

To cope with these pressures, some shops are diversifying their menus by introducing new items such as kebabs, pizzas, or masala fish, while others are reducing their offerings to improve efficiency. This report, the first of its kind from Seafish, sheds light on how the sector is navigating challenging economic conditions.

Cod, haddock, scampi, and fishcakes remain the most common seafood options on menus. Haddock tends to be more popular in Scotland, Yorkshire, and the Midlands, whereas cod dominates in other parts of the UK. Jennifer Robson, the report’s author, emphasizes the enduring popularity of fish and chips, describing it as one of Britain’s most iconic and widely enjoyed meals.

Robson adds: “Fish and chip shops not only play a crucial role in local economies and communities but also offer consumers access to a diverse range of seafood beyond the usual cod and haddock. Lesser-known species such as plaice, skate, and pollock provide excellent quality and variety.”

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, welcomed the report, noting its value for benchmarking and understanding the sector’s economic impact. “The findings underscore the resilience and adaptability of fish and chip businesses. Despite challenges, they continue to evolve with changing consumer tastes and economic conditions, preserving a cherished British food tradition,” he said.
